10 Common Office Trailer Problems and How to Solve Them
Every problem below has a solution. Most can be prevented entirely with proper planning. Here are the issues we see most frequently across hundreds of office trailer deployments — and exactly how to fix each one.
No Water on Site
Cause
No city water main at the job site. Common on remote construction sites, rural locations, and greenfield development projects where utilities have not been extended yet.
Solution
Deploy a portable water supply system. A single Water Box provides 660 gallons, refilled 1-2 times per week. Daisy-chain up to 3 units for 1,980 gallons total.
Equipment
Water Box — 660 gal, Moro DC-10 pump, 20-gal pressure tank, 12V battery powered.
No Sewer Connection on Site
Cause
No municipal sewer access. EPA prohibits discharging gray water or sewage to the ground or storm drains, so waste must be contained and hauled.
Solution
Deploy a portable waste collection system. The Waste Box captures all waste water in sealed IBC totes, pumped out weekly by a licensed hauler.
Equipment
Waste Box — 660 gal, dual sewage pumps, auto-spillover, high-level alarms.
No Power on Site
Cause
No utility pole or temporary power available. Requesting a temporary power connection from the utility company can take 4-8 weeks in some areas.
Solution
Deploy a towable diesel generator sized to your trailer. Generators can be on site within days versus weeks for utility connections. We handle fueling and maintenance.
Equipment
Generator — 20-50+ kW diesel, 24+ hour runtime, continuous duty rated. See our sizing guide.
Freezing Pipes in Winter
Cause
Exposed water lines and waste plumbing under the trailer freeze when temperatures drop below 32F. Frozen pipes can crack, causing flooding and equipment damage when they thaw.
Solution
Install heat trace cable on all exposed water lines, insulate pipes (R-5 minimum), install skirting to protect under-trailer plumbing, and add antifreeze to waste drain lines.
Equipment
Winterization service — heat trace, pipe insulation, skirting, Water Box heat tape on IBC totes.
Emergency freeze protocol: (1) Shut off water supply immediately. (2) Open all faucets to relieve pressure. (3) Apply heat to frozen sections with a heat gun or portable heater. (4) Inspect for cracks before restoring water. (5) Call Stahla service: (844) 900-3190.
Insufficient Restrooms for Worker Count
Cause
Crew size exceeds the OSHA toilet-to-worker ratio (1 per 15 workers for 21-200 workers). Common when subcontractors mobilize and the site headcount spikes.
Solution
Deploy a dedicated restroom trailer separate from the office trailer. Available in 2-stall, 4-stall, 8-station, and 10-station configurations.
Equipment
Restroom trailer — 2 to 10 stations. See our OSHA guide for ratios.
Workers Need Showers
Cause
Workers exposed to lead, asbestos, or hazardous materials require decontamination showers per OSHA. Multi-week construction camps with overnight crews also need shower facilities.
Solution
Deploy a dedicated shower trailer. Available in 8-stall private (individual doors) or 8-stall flex (open room for high throughput) configurations.
Equipment
Shower trailer — 8-stall private or 8-stall flex.
Fuel Storage Compliance Issues
Cause
Aggregate aboveground fuel storage exceeds 1,320 gallons (generator tank + auxiliary tanks), triggering EPA SPCC requirements. Spill kits missing. Secondary containment absent.
Solution
Deploy a containment berm sized at 110% of the largest container. Keep a spill kit on site near fuel storage. Develop and maintain an SPCC plan.
Equipment
Containment berm + spill kit.
ADA Non-Compliance
Cause
Government project or public-facing office trailer without accessible entrance. Missing ramp, non-compliant door width, or inaccessible restroom triggers ADA violations.
Solution
Install an ADA-compliant ramp (1:12 slope, 36-inch width, handrails) and ensure doors meet 32-inch clear opening. Add accessible restroom if required. See our ADA guide.
Equipment
ADA ramp + ADA-compliant trailer configuration.
Water Pressure Drop
Cause
Undersized pump, long hose runs, or multiple fixtures drawing water simultaneously. Pressure drops cause toilets that will not flush and sinks with weak flow.
Solution
Use a pressure tank system to maintain consistent pressure even during demand spikes. The Water Box includes a 20-gallon pressure tank that buffers flow.
Equipment
Water Box — built-in 20-gal pressure tank maintains steady pressure.
Waste Overflow
Cause
Holding tank or Waste Box capacity exceeded between service visits. More workers on site than planned, missed pump-out, or longer work weeks than scheduled.
Solution
Increase holding capacity by daisy-chaining additional Waste Box units, or increase pump-out frequency. The Waste Box's high-level alarm provides early warning before overflow.
Equipment
Waste Box — daisy-chain up to 3 units (1,980 gal). Increased service frequency.
How to Prevent Most Problems
- Plan utilities before ordering. Know whether you have water, sewer, and power at the site before requesting a quote. This determines your support equipment needs.
- Size for peak headcount. Account for subcontractor surges when sizing restrooms, water, and waste capacity.
- Winterize early. Do not wait for the first freeze. Install heat trace, insulation, and skirting before cold weather arrives.
- Maintain service access. Keep paths clear for pump trucks, fuel delivery, and equipment service.
- Call us at the first sign of trouble. (844) 900-3190 — 24/7 emergency support. Small problems become expensive problems when ignored.
