Temporary Fencing for Job Sites
Types, regulations, and cost ranges for temporary construction fencing.
Types of Temporary Fencing
Chain Link Panels
The industry standard for construction site perimeters. 6-foot or 8-foot tall panels, typically 10-12 feet wide, set in weighted bases (concrete blocks or sand bags). Panels interlock with clamps — no digging required.
- 6-foot panels: Standard for most commercial sites. Meets OSHA requirements for site perimeter. Most common rental option.
- 8-foot panels: Higher security. Required by some municipalities and DOT projects. Better for sites with valuable equipment or materials.
- Privacy screens: Mesh fabric attached to chain link panels. Blocks sightlines, reduces dust and debris blowout. Often required on urban sites.
Panel Barricades
Steel crowd-control barricades (bike rack style). 3.5 feet tall, interlocking. Used for pedestrian routing, not full perimeter security. Common on urban sidewalk projects and road work.
Jersey Barriers with Fencing
Concrete jersey barriers topped with chain link panels. Used on road projects and sites adjacent to traffic. Provides vehicle barrier and pedestrian protection simultaneously.
When You Need Temporary Fencing
- OSHA requirement: Construction sites must be secured from unauthorized entry. Fencing is the most straightforward way to meet this requirement.
- Municipal permits: Most building permits require site fencing as a condition of approval. Check your jurisdiction — height, gate, and signage requirements vary.
- Liability protection: Fencing reduces your exposure to trespass injuries. If a child walks onto an unfenced site and gets hurt, that is your problem.
- Theft deterrence: Fencing alone does not stop determined thieves, but it slows opportunistic theft and makes your site look controlled. Pair with security cameras for real protection.
Common Regulations
Requirements vary by city and state. These are the most common provisions — always verify with your local building department.
- Height: 6 feet minimum is standard. Some jurisdictions require 8 feet for demolition or high-rise work.
- Gates: Must be lockable and wide enough for emergency vehicle access (typically 12-14 feet).
- Signage: "No Trespassing" and "Construction Site — Authorized Personnel Only" signs are typically required at gates and every 100 feet of perimeter.
- Windscreen: Required on many urban sites to contain dust and debris. Green or black mesh attached to chain link.
Cost Ranges
Temporary fencing is typically rented by the linear foot per month. Ranges depend on your location, panel height, and rental duration.
| Type | Cost per Linear Foot / Month |
|---|---|
| 6-foot chain link panels | $1.50-$3.00 |
| 8-foot chain link panels | $2.50-$4.50 |
| Privacy screen add-on | $0.50-$1.00 |
| Gates (each) | $75-$150 / month |
Installation and removal are typically charged separately — $3-$6 per linear foot for install, similar for removal. Longer rental terms often get reduced monthly rates.
